Propeller Goes to 11
2008-03-18

With respect to Nigel Tufnel, “we go to eleven”. 2008 is already looking very strong as we continue honing of our process, systems and service delivering ever-more strategic services. Our key phrases for 2008 are “continuous evolution” and “proactive strategy”.

More info regarding Nigel’s love for loudness: In "This is Spinal Tap," he pointed out to director Marty DiBergi that the settings on Tap’s Marshall amps could extend beyond the standard 10 mark. Nigel: "You see, most blokes will be playing at 10. You’re on 10, all the way up, all the way up...Where can you go from there? Nowhere. What we do, is if we need that extra push over the cliff...Eleven. One louder." DiBergi: "Why don’t you just make 10 louder and make 10 be the top number, and make that a little louder?" Nigel (after taking a moment to let this sink in): "These go to 11." In 1990, Marshall released its JCM900 amp, with the knobs going to 20 (GW2), although Nigel says the company later gave him a special model that goes to infinity (complete with the infinity symbol—an eight on its side—and a dial that keeps spinning around as if it were broken). (EW) The company also makes faceplates for all of its amp models that go to 11. In a 1984 interview, Nigel revealed that his Gibson guitar pickups were modified to go to 11, as well—meaning that with both his amp and guitar turned all the way up, he could hit 22. (GP) A T-shirt that reads "Goes to 11" is now a collector’s item because it sold so poorly immediately after DiBergi’s film was released. Finally, a posting to the Internet group alt.fan.spinal-tap by Ray Abbitt shed some light on the history of powered amps: "Early Fender Champs (a small, low-powered amp, probably intended for practice) had no controls except for a volume control that went to 11. And from about 5 on up, they didn’t get any louder—just more distorted. A number of artists use them for recording and some (including Neil Young) use them for live performances. Most of us who are lucky enough to own one (mine was built in 1953 or 1954) turn them up to 11 cause they sound so damn good." Nigel's now famous phrase have even been recognized by the Oxford English Dictionary.

The challenge facing all forms of broadcasting and publications today is how to remain relevant in the new media paradigm. 2 Golds for Propeller
2007-05-01

For the second consecutive year, Propeller Media Works has been recognized for excellence in website development. The Horizon Interactive Awards is an international competition recognizing outstanding achievement among interactive media producers. This year, Propeller’s own site (propellermediaworks.com) won a top Gold award in the highly competitive Self Promotion/Customer Identity category. Propeller’s work for the Stowe Area Association (www.gostowe.com) won a second Gold award in the Consumer Information category.

After celebrating our 10th year anniversary, these rewards serve as icing on the cake. “Being recognized at this level by this group of judges is particularly rewarding” said David Gibson, Founder of Propeller. “We are sharing the stage with international level shops that we’ve long looked up to,” continued Gibson.

With growing international recognition and 10 years of experience designing and building tier-one websites and web-based applications, the Propeller looks to enhance its online marketing program in the next year while continuing to push creative design and deep technical functionality.

Interactive Marketing Seminar
2007-04-24

Event Photos

As we face a continuously evolving marketing landscape, part of Propeller’s job is to always be passing on what we learn to our customers. Toward that end, we held our second seminar on April 20th, 2007 and invited Dave Winslow, Founder and President of EpikOne, to present. EpikOne is one of a handful of Google certified consultants for Google Analytics and their new multivariate testing tool Google Optimizer.

Clients and regional marketing leaders joined in a discussion that started with the concepts that are currently driving effective i-marketing, and then drilled into measuring performance with Google Analytics and multivariate testing with Google Optimizer.

For those attending, this served as an important chance to get up to speed with current thinking and i-marketing tools, and to join in a comfortable conversation with those who are driving it forward.

If you would like to attend our next seminar (TBD), please email David Gibson at dgibson@propelled.com.

The food was amazing (thanks Dish), the wine was quite nice (thanks James), and the company included great friends, members of the crew who have since moved on, clients, and family. A great time. We think the site represents a solid blend of well targeted web design, web technologies, and online marketing.

Propeller Turns 10
2007-01-16

Burlington - This year Propeller Media Works, LLC celebrates its 10th year in the business. Since 1997 Propeller has successfully focused on just one thing: building great websites. "We're often asked to design logos and print advertising, but we don't want to get distracted. We just want to build better custome web solutions," according to David Gibson, Founding Partner of Propeller. From its client roster and their rate of retention, it is clear that Propeller is headed in the right direction.

Propeller started at just the right time. The Web was brand new and demand was quickly growing. "10 years ago, sites were either pretty but two dimensional, or ugly with no marketing message. So I tried to fill the gap and blend good design with technical functionality," remembered Gibson. "To deliver the functionality, I soon needed a real programmer." Propeller's first hire was Daniel Hansen. "Dan was great because he was passionate about pushing the technology to deliver more than clients expected," said Gibson. That passion for exceeding expectations became a core value of the company's culture.

The need for a deeper and broader technical foundation led to the merger with Scully Interactive in 2004. "Dave and I knew each other for quite some time," says Russ Scully, now Director of Technology and Partner at Propeller. "We knew that in bringing our teams together, the combination would be much greater than the sum of its parts," said Scully. "Propeller's design has always been strong, but now our technical depth really sets us apart," added Scully. The one size fits all approach is foreign to Propeller. While they do make use of a large library of code and predeveloped systems, each requires extensive customization.

With hundreds of websites under the belt, a crew of 15, and a beautiful workspace; what's next for Propeller? Big for 2007 is expanding their Internet marketing services. "Its very competitive out there, and customers are demanding a higher level of service. They're looking for not only more traffic, but better traffic. We now have those strategies and the tools to measure success. Its turning from art to science, and that is very exciting." said Gibson.

Southern Vermont’s most exclusive address now has a new web address as well. Propeller is proud to announce that haystackclub.com is now open. The site features Propeller’s propCMS content management system, propBulkMailer bulk email system, and a snazzy Flash contact form. Pete Foytho, the site’s designer said, “It is always a challenge to create a real estate development site because visual assets are in short supply. You need to create a unique sense of place and desirable sales experience with only illustrations and stock photography at your disposal.”

We think Pete did a great job. The client is also thrilled with the flow of inquiries that has resulted. Take a tour at www.haystackclub.com

When Rumson New Jersey based High Speed Video (HSV) needed to create a new website to promote their new patented and proprietary “Telepresence” systems, they turned to a videoconferencing industry expert, Richard Parlato for his advice on who to use. The new HSV website will include Propeller’s content management system and an automated demo scheduling system allowing users to locate and request a demo at the nearest reseller. HSV will also create new video content that will be included in a multifunction embedded Flash application on the site’s homepage. An early spring launch is anticipated.

Synergy
2006-12-26

With the proliferation of third party solutions, it’s crucial to have flexible systems and talented web programmers to tie everything together.

Here, our client Synergy Software Technologies, Inc. planned to introduce an online training program and needed a way to allow their customers to select and pay for the courses first. Synergy had already developed the courses using a third party online education system called Adobe Connect, but Adobe lacked the ecommerce component. We took advantage of Adobe’s API (Application Programming Interface), which allows developers like us to hook into the system and develop custom extensions or tie-ins. Using our propEcom system as a base, we are creating a custom tie-in to integrate with the Adobe Connect to provide the online course catalog presentation, the secure transactions, and finally the access seamlessly. On the operational side, we customized our propEcom system to tie in with their Quickbooks accounting software.

Our solution will soon allow Synergy to take advantage of a training solution that will be effective and convenient for their customers, while providing an additional income stream with little overhead costs.

As a broker in the carbon offset market, they sell clean carbon credits to individuals and corporations in order to offset their carbon consumption. Those transactions then go toward funding of Native American, farmer-owned, and charitable purpose renewable energy projects that create social, economic, and environmental benefits.

For Native Energy, Propeller developed a web-based carbon consumption calculator for multiple forms of transportation. The calculator utilizes the Google Maps API (Application Programming Interface) to provide the visual map experience, and to acquire the distance calculations. The tool allows for multiple legs and forms of transportation and once calculated, feeds into the next step of purchasing the carbon offsets for the proposed trip.

Propeller’s role will be to redevelop the website and create a highly functional extranet for coordinating the distribution of donated food to the community level partners. Replacing a fax and phone process for taking orders will be a real-time inventory system that will increase accuracy and time to delivery, while streamlining the fulfillment process.

Vertek 2.0
2006-09-18

Vertek provides resources and strategy to the telecom industry, and we’re very pleased to have a second redevelopment engagement. In this round, we’ll be adding plenty of back-end functionality and online marketing exposure. Our well regarded propCMS 2.8 will enable the group to easily manage their website, and our propBulkmailer 3.0 will support their online push marketing. The companies “pull” marketing will be enhanced by organic search engine optimization and active paid search programs.

Vermont Public Radio
2006-08-21

For those that live in Vermont or have visited here, you likely know that we’re very lucky to have one of the country’s leading public radio stations. VPR contributes to the quality of life here in so many ways. Needless to say, it’s a thrill that they selected us over competition both within and outside the state.

Nationwide, public radio is radically changing in response to the evolution in media. As a leader in this community, VPR is pushing the envelop to open new online opportunities and deliver a wider spectrum of programming and service to their audience online. VPR has partnered now with Propeller to collaboratively deliver this new initiative.

Haystack Club
2006-08-03

Propeller has been invited to partner with the Haystack Club to help promote their exciting new private gated residences and recreation community. The Haystack Club is a ski, golf, and equestrian resort offering the finest services and amenities all available to their discerning clientele. Propeller was chosen based on the studio’s extensive recreation and real estate development experience, as well as a previous strong working relationship with Haystack Club’s president, David Dillon. A late fall launch is anticipated.

Russell Reid and Mr. John
2006-07-13

Another category leader has chosen Propeller as a web development partner. Russell Reid has been providing wastewater management services in the New Jersey, greater New York, eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware area from seven strategic locations to commercial, industrial and residential customers since 1943. Its sister company, Mr. John, has been the region’s leading provider of temporary restrooms rentals and service since 1964. After a review including several NYC based firms, Propeller was awarded the account based on the combination of excellent B2B and B2C experience, strong visual portfolio, and depth of technological solutions. A late fall launch is anticipated.

Rutland Regional Medical Center
2006-07-03

Adding to our growing healthcare experience, this project allowed us to further understand the unique marketing issues found in healthcare today. Besides the shear volume of information, we faced multiple audiences with diverse needs, HIPA regulations, and highly competitive recruiting environment. Propeller stepped up to these challenges and delivered a website solution that matched the quality of the care found at the state's second largest hospital. After a great deal of information architecture consultation, the paired down site now offers more direct access to the information that is requested most often. RRMC now has a system that includes our propCMS to manage the ever-changing healthcare content and propBulkMailer to push knowledge content to interested audiences. Multiple recruitment features have been included as well as a new site survey tool to evaluate new site features. A revamped “Find a Doctor” feature is planned for phase 2 as well as ecommerce functionality. See the new site at www.rrmc.org.

Propeller has expanded our relationship with the world’s second largest Pharmaceutical company, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). PMW will be developing a new site for GSK’s Center for External Excellence in Drug Discovery (CEEDD) division. The CEEDD site will be a critical marketing and operational tool to help the company bring new products in to the GSK pipeline through early partnerships with smaller drug developers. The CEEDD site will feature Design, programming, Flash Animations, PMW’s PropCMS content management system, and a highly customized Business Plan submission system with extensive administrative work flow and integration with GSK’s in-house contact management system. A fall launch is anticipated.

Gunstock Mountain Resort in Guilford New Hampshire selected Propeller after a review of 5 national interactive development firms. Gunstock offers a wide array of both summer and winter activities and Propeller will be developing targeted websites to promote each season. In addition, Gunstock will be implementing Propeller's PropCMS, PropBulkMail, and integrating with an existing Point of Sale system. A fall 2006 launch is planned.

Alfy.com
2006-06-13

To be completely clear, we did not program this site. Alfy hired us for our design talent and asked us to provide a design system that would appeal to “tweens”. What’s a tween? Don’t even ask. The success story here is that we dove into a genre that we have absolutely no background in and delivered. Our creative team loves to dive into new things and expand their creative quivers. No challenge is too great. I just hope we’re not asked to design for whatever is younger than a “tween”! visit website

The Villas at Trapp Family Lodge
2006-06-13

If you’ve ever wondered what a microsite is, this is a great example. The idea is to pull the visitor into an area with a narrow set of choices and no distractions. All the navigation is focused on providing information that supports the desired action. Everything works together to drive the visitor toward that action. In this case, Trapp Family Lodge is selling upscale real estate. The goal is to acquire leads and not just leads in volume but qualified leads. As the quality of the leads rise, the cost to make a sale goes down. By presenting the product in an honest and appealing way and offering just enough information to tickle interest, we begin to deliver those leads. Now. Getting those potential leads to the website in the first place is another story altogether. The online marketing piece to this puzzle is a sophisticated combination that we look forward to making a case study of in the future. Stay tuned. visit website

Trapp Family Lodge
2006-05-10

No Really. The hills are alive. The Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, VT carries a unique history and a reputation that makes it one of the preeminent destinations in Vermont. Their motto “A Little of Austria… A lot of Vermont” tells only part of the story, which you really need to experience to fully understand. This was a natural fit for us with our experience in the travel/destination resort area and especially in Stowe. After “sampling the product” (and how fine that was) we developed a connection that helped us carry their brand forward to the web with a fresh new look. We developed the site on our Content Management System that includes the ecommerce component, and our html bulk email system. The site also features an interactive “grounds map”, which will be launching as a phase two item. visit website

Synergy
2006-05-10

Synergy Software Technologies Inc. is a leading provider of web based human services software solutions for the state government level. We’ve always enjoyed working with category leaders and further establishing their presence within the space. In this case we tightened their understanding of their brand and carried that into the design of the site, where we focused the message to both the case manager and director levels. Both visually and structurally we organized the site around people, services, and applications. As always now, the site rides on top of our Content Management System, which enables their web content administrator complete access to easily keep the site up to date. visit website

Harbour Industries
2006-05-10

Whatever you do, do NOT cut the red wire… Since 1965, Harbour Industries has been manufacturing high temperature and high performance cable for the military, commercial, and industrial markets. The challenge that we so often feed off of is reaching into a business category we have no experience in and applying our creativity and online business sense to deliver a web solution that is really going to launch them ahead of the competition. It’s a real pride we feel when we succeed. In this project, we wiped the slate clean and started with strategy to create a game plan that was aggressive but obtainable. We provided information architecture planning, creative design and technical consulting and execution. The result is a very utilitarian website that supports their brand and enables B2B customers to access product information and start down the sales funnel. Using our bilingual Content Management System, Harbour can easily edit both English and French content as needed. Unique to this site is the "cable coach", which is a wizard for customers to navigate the complicated process of accurately finding the appropriate product. visit website

3 Horizon Awards
2006-04-27

Gold went to our Ski Area Management website within the Magazine / News category which beat out sites from CNN and The Onion! Stowe Mountain Resort grabbed a Silver for their site in the crowded Consumer Information category along side Bose, Subaru and CVS. Longwood Industries Longwood Industries followed with a Bronze for their B2B site Horizon Awards

Alfy
2006-03-14

Alfy.com is an online game site for kids. We have little experience designing for this category, but such is often the case. Had we ever designed a website for a food publication before EatingWell? No. What about world class resorts before Stowe? No. What we’re good at is getting into the skin of our partners and their online audience and coming up with designs that work. They work at meeting the goals of our partner. They work at meeting the goals of their visitors. This is what we’re good at, and this is why Alfy.com hired us to design the interface to their new site to launch in the summer of 2006.

East Boston Neighborhood Health Center
2006-03-13

The East Boston Neighborhood Health Center has been providing accessible, high-quality health care to all who live and work in East Boston and the surrounding communities for over 35 years. The organization had never had a website before, and looked to us to guide them through the entire process. Soup to nuts. In parallel to this project has been an even larger project for the Rutland Regional Medical Center in Vermont (soon to launch). This in conjunction with our experience with Spaulding Hospital in Boston gave us a head start on many of the communication and technical issues we would face. Running on a Microsoft version of our Content Management System, the site offers their non-technical staff the easy access to maintain their site and expand their communications over time. On the horizon are multilingual versions, which our CMS is already designed to support. visit website

Seventh Generation
2006-03-10

Seventh Generation continues to be a Vermont grown success story. By capitalizing on rapidly growing demand for safe non-toxic household products, Seventh Generation is leading the charge. Leading the crusade is Jeffrey Hollander, President & CEO, who through books, speaking engagements, blogs, emails and his website is educating people and catapulting awareness of the dangers out there, and the benefits of his company’s products. Their success puts them at the top of growth companies in Vermont year after year. Our initial marching orders were to just replace the content management system – and not to touch the design of the site. The pre-existing system lacked the flexibility and scalability that ours offered, and the company was doing a poor job on customer service. So with our reputation for solid technology and our burley CMS, Seventh Generation came knocking. They loved our CMS and recognized the value of having a solid partner that had everything. But not touch the design? Come now. How could we not do just a little to make it better? A little here… a little there… Now the site looks and functions much better on the front end, and is worlds apart on the backend. As a fellow Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility member, and “green” company, we’re very proud to have Seventh Generation as a neighbor and a client. Putting our creativity and technology behind this company feels very good, and we look forward to the future with Seventh Generation. visit website

Verdatum
2006-03-10

Verdatum provides law firms and legal departments with a digital dictation system that integrates with an existing document management system. Verdatum came to Propeller in need of a refresh and to gain control of their content. As a cost savings measure, we gave the site a “face lift” – an evolution versus a revolution in the site’s design. In addition to using Flash on the homepage to promote the company’s key brand message, and through the creative process we offered up a new tag line “Transcription Transformed”. They loved it. Other key features of the site include a Customer Support Extranet and integrated our Content Management System (CMS) into the site website. The Customer Support Extranet allows self-service access to support information for registered customers, which will reduce operational costs associated with printing, mailing and phone support. The CMS now allows Verdatum to easily update content and add new pages to the site securely. The easy to use, web-based system includes version control, permission access controls, approval workflow functions and a wysywig toolbar for content formatting control. visit website

EatingWell
2006-02-17

There is neither a chef nor a nutritionist that doesn’t love EatingWell for their creative and healthy recipes, and informative articles. We are incredibly proud to launch the evolution of eatingwell.com. There you’ll find an elegant fresh design that coordinates harmoniously with the brand, an intuitive navigation system, and useful features for the professional and amateur chef. The project involved a complete overhaul of the design and information architecture of the site, while adding a wide range of functionality that includes a “myEatingWell” set of personalized features, recipe box, and banner ad integration. According to Russ Scully, partner and director of technologies, “What is really impressive is how well our content management system adapted and scaled to meet EatingWell’s unique demands”. This is Propeller’s third web development project for a print publisher. visit website

Ben Ipsen
2006-02-09

Responding to the intense demand for an ever higher level of strategy and execution, we’ve had to reach out again and have found an excellent new addition for our crew. This puts us at 14. Ever meet the kind of person who is a rockstar at seemingly opposite mediums – the artist and geek? Ben is just that guy – a renaissance man with the skills of an aspiring master. Not only is he an accomplished visual artist and musician, but he’s also a hardcore code warrior. Ben will be applying both his visual and coding skills in driving our production team towards ever-smarter uses of technology with pixel perfect precision. Ben will also be responsible for staying ahead of search engine optimization standards and techniques to maximize our customer’s organic search positioning. According to his sister Loren, he’s also a sick skier.
